This is an exciting time of the year in Nanaimo. Numerous species of birds are arriving in decent numbers. I am very happy to present to you some of these birds.These are some of the species recently spotted in and around the Greater Regional District of Nanaimo: Canada Goose, Brant, Mallard, Harlequin Duck, Surf Scoter, White-winged Scoter, Bufflehead, Common Merganser, Red-breasted Merganser, Pacific Loon, Common Loon, Horned Grebe, Red-necked Grebe, Double-Crested Cormorant, Pelagic Cormorant, Turkey Vulture, Bald Eagle, Cooper's Hawk, Black OysterCatcher, Bonaparte's Gull, Mew Gull, California Gull, Thayer's Gull, Rufous Hummingbird, Belted Kingfisher, Red-breaster Sapsucker, Downy Woodpecker, Hairy Woodpecker, Northern Flicker, Northwestern Crow, Common Raven, Violet-backed Chickadee, Brown-creeper, Bewick's Wren, Pacific Wren, Northern Shrike, American Dipper, Golden-crowned Kinglet, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, American Robin, European Robin, European Starling, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Spotted Towhee, White-crowned Sparrow, Dark-eyed Junco, Great Blue Heron . As usual, majority of these birds can be seen in the Buttertubs marsh, Nanaimo River Estuary, the Nanaimo waterfront area and other various parks.
